Limited edition print!

On March 2nd 2017, our drummer Jamie Oliver is organising a charity skydiving event which will see him and 10 of his friends take to the skies and plummet towards the ground in order to raise money for Zoë’s Place, a local baby hospice who provide palliative, respite and end-of-life services to babies and children under the age of 5. And so in support of this most worthy of causes, photographer Andy Thorn has been so kind as to donate 25 of these awesome prints, signed by our Charlie Harper, to sell online and donate the proceeds to Zoë’s Place. With only 25 in existence we expect that these won’t be available for long so head over to the store now!

Charlie interviewed in Classic Rock

U.K. Subs frontman Charlie Harper looks back on four decades at punk’s frontline

With U.K. Subs, frontman Charlie Harper has spent four decades manning punk’s front line. Now 72, the one-time bluesman and hairdresser talks about a long life less ordinary.

By the time that dyed-in-the-wool bluesman Charlie Harper first witnessed punk rock in the flesh he was 32. Immediately moved to embrace the scene, he initially reinvented his R&B combo The Marauders as The Subversives before finally settling on the appropriately short and sharp epithet U.K. Subs.

Having made their vinyl debut (caught live at Covent Garden Brit-punk crucible The Roxy on New Year’s Eve 1977) the quartet enjoyed a rapid ascent. Though largely dismissed by the music press, they found an early champion in Radio 1’s John Peel, and widespread grass-roots support as they surfed punk’s second wave. A flurry of hits (Stranglehold, Tomorrow’s Girls, She’s Not There, Warhead) repeatedly took them to Top Of The Pops and mainstream infamy, before they dipped back beneath the radar to become international cult heroes. Latterly embraced (alongside Sham 69 and Cock Sparrer) as pioneers of street-punk, the U.K. Subs – in a number of incarnations, but always fronted by Charlie Harper – have never ceased gigging, racking up more than 200 shows a year for as close to four decades as doesn’t matter…

Hello everyone,

As you are no doubt aware by now, we are at the very tail end of an incredible campaign which has seen us write and record the 26th and final UK Subs album, Ziezo. The partnership that achieved this feat has spanned the last decade and produced the last 4 albums, providing perhaps the most stable period of UK Subs’ history.

However, as time inevitably presses on, relationships expire and new ones form. And so it is with regret that UK Subs are, by mutual agreement, to part company with guitarist Jet. This may come as a shock to some, but ultimately it is a decision that has not been taken lightly.

We’d like to thank Jet for a decade of outstanding service and wish him the very best in all of his future endeavours. We also extend our thanks to you in advance, for your ongoing support and understanding during this time.

We shall be trying out a few candidates in the coming weeks. Suffice to say we hope our next choice will allow us to continue and thrive through the next phase of UK Subs. In the meantime please do not contact us offering your services or telling us of a friend who would be perfect for the job as we have very specific criteria for what we are looking for and already have people in mind. Further updates to follow.

Ziezo album review!

Here is the very first review of ‘Ziezo’, written by Steve Cotton at the wonderful online music blog Art of the State.

UK SUBS – ‘Ziezo’ album (16 tracks, released April 2016)

Way back in 1979 the UK Subs released their first album ‘Another Kind Of Blues’. Followed up by ‘Brand New Age’ and ‘Crash Course’ by the time ‘Diminished Responsibility’ came around it was obvious even then to my teenage mind that the album titles were running in alphabetical order. At that time the group reaching the letter Z seemed like an impossible target. Band members joined and left with vocalist Charlie Harper being the only constant throughout. Some albums were more memorable than others but over the last few titles, as the band approached their target, a line up has emerged that really has hit their groove. Ziezo, the last full UK Subs album in the series, is a fitting finale. Full of precision hard hitting drumming, solid bass lines and choppy crunching guitar it delivers throughout. And then there is the voice of Charlie over the top, still with plenty to say and the means to deliver it. He makes a mockery of his advancing years once again on this outing.

Brand new song posted!

This morning we posted a brand new song for you guys to check out! ‘Ive got a gun’ is another Gibbs penned classic about a redneck threatening to go on a rampage. Have a listen by going to the updates section of our PledgeMusic page.

Here are the lyrics:

Got myself an armoury,
every type of weaponry,
M16s and 45s,
enough to take a thousand lives:

gifts from god, state approved,
mess with me and you’ll be removed

(Chorus) I’ve got a gun, I’ve got a gun, I’ve got a gun!

Gun fire makes me warm inside,
misty eyed,
murdering animals just for fun,
perhaps a human before I’m done:

bullets that penetrate,
exit wounds the size of a plate

Dream of killing a president,
an avenging angel heaven sent,
and if I do don’t be surprised,
you should have seen it in my eyes:

gifts from god, state approved,
mess with me you’ll be removed,
bullets that penetrate,
exit wounds the size of a plate
